DOS for remote interrogation of PPM/ICD while patient is in the hospital

Date: Mar 20, 2025

Question:

I have a question regarding the remote interrogation of PPMs and ICDs while the patient is inpatient status in the hospital. We are receiving denials stating that POS 11 (office) is not appropriate when the patient is in the hospital (POS 21). Some of our coders are advising that we change the POS to 21 (hosp), but some of us feel that is incorrect since the work of the physician and device tech was performed in the office (POS 11). Others are advising that the DOS be moved out past the date of d/c. Ex: original DOS was 3/4 but the patient was Inpatient 3/1-3/5, use DOS 3/6 for the device check? We are not sure about this either. CPT states that 93294 (PPM) & 93295 (ICD) are billed no more than once every 90 days. Moving the DOS would satisfy this guideline since it would be around 93 days since the prior device check. What is your advice?
